How many famous people came from Dunbar? Well, there’s that actor bloke who played a cop, Aynsley of course, who played with Zappa – and John Muir, whose trail I have been following since Holyrood Park. According to Wikipedia he was (deep breath) ‘a naturalist, author, environmental philosopher, botanist, zoologist, glaciologist, and early advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the USA.’ Sounds like a good chap to me. Also his Wikipedia photo shows him with a long beard, hat and waistcoat. That seals it for me. I admit he’s not holding a glass, but you can’t have everything. I’m now at the end of the John Muir Trail, which is outside his birthplace. Tonight I will raise a glass of Lamothe-Bergeron to him, Aynsley and the cop bloke.

I very much enjoy these affordable Crus Bourgeois that can be picked up for around a tenner in France during the supermarket wine fairs. Ch. Fonreaud, Cissac, Haut-Maurac are others worth looking out for. This bottle came from Carrefour six or so years ago, in a nice wooden case if I remember correctly. It’s 50/50 Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, and tastes like it. No real surprises, but what it does, it does really well. Excellent value for money, in other words. Still a decent amount of firm tannin, but maybe a little less fruit than there used to be. CellarTracker says finish off this year. I think that’s a good call, and also decent timing for me having one bottle left. Then on to the box of 2016s!
